Minerals & Nutrition > Boron
We need boron for healthy bones
as it aids in the
metabolism of calcium, phosphorus and magnesium. It also supports brain function
and alertness.
Research has shown that boron increases the life span of some insects and used demonstrated to
overcome the effects of vitamin D deficiency in test animals. It appears
that boron, in combination with vitamin D enhances the mineral
content of bone, while boron alone enhances the maturation of growth cartilage.
Boron is therefore beneficial to bone growth in animals and humans. The addition of dietary boron in
animals increased femoral length, peak load bearing, and strength, as well as
the peak load bearing and strength of the lumbar vertebra.

Boron Deficiency Symptoms:
- Decreased calcium, magnesium and phosphorus levels
- Decreased estrogen and testosterone synthesis
- Breakdown of hormone function
- Decreased vitamin D synthesis
- Decreased steroid synthesis
Dietary Sources of Boron:
Fruits and vegetables, however, the concentration of boron in plants
depends on adequate concentrations of boron in the soil the plants are grown
in. Other good dietary sources of boron are legumes, pulses, nuts and
nutritional supplements. A balanced vegetarian diet is thought to be higher in
boron than many typical Western diets.
