Mechanical intervention
Surgeries are a marvel of human understanding about our own bodies and fossil
records show that surgeries have been performed over the past 5000 years. As far
as we know, the first surgeries were developed to repair soldiers broken by war
and as civilisation and knowledge of the human body developed surgeries became a
popular fix and remain so until this day.
Surgery is an aspect of medicine that deals with the physical manipulation or
removal of a bodily structure to help prevent or cure an ailment. Ambroise Paré,
a 16th century French surgeon, stated that there were five reasons to perform
surgery:
- “To eliminate that which is superfluous,
- restore that which has been dislocated,
- separate that which has been united,
- join that which has been divided and
- repair the defects of nature.”
In some instances surgery has become a short cut medicine as with the removal of
organs such as the appendix and tonsils. These surgeries have become so routine
that people hardly ever think about them any more, however the inflammation of
the appendix and tonsils which can be uncomfortable and even life-threatening
should an appendix burst; of these two, problems are simply a symptom of a
dietary and lifestyle imbalance which most times can easily be resolved through
