Arthritis Tips
Rheumatoid
arthritis (RA) is usually treated by
powerful drugs which suppress the
symptoms. However, there are options
available that attack the cause of
the problem, rather than the effect.
Feverfew is an old folk remedy for
rheumatoid arthritis. Studies have
confirmed its effectiveness, but only
when it contains at least 0.4 per
cent of the active ingredient,
parthenolide. Most commercial
versions of feverfew do not contain
significant amounts of parthenolide.
A study of 35 commercially available
preparations found either no, or
precious little, parthenolide. (J
Pharm Pharmacol, 1992,122, 266-70)
Avocados may
offer relief. The Mayan Indians of
the Yucatan Peninsula and Guatemala
have been found to be RA free. Their
diet includes regular servings of
ripe avocado. Various North west
Amazon tribes are also reported to be
free of RA, presumably for the same
reason. (Encyclopaedia of Healing
Juices, 1994)
Diet is clearly
linked to the incidence of RA.
Arthritis may be caused by a hidden
allergy. In one study 75 per cent of
patients improved after they
eliminated suspected allergens from
their diet. (Lancet, 1986,1, 236-8)
Many RA
patients suffer from low gastric acid
levels. This can in turn lead to
leaky gut, which is known to lead to
inflammatory joint disease (including
RA). We suspect that there may also
be a link to
Candida
Wearing
a copper bracelet helps.
A study of 240 RA patients found that
those given a copper bracelet
reported a significant improvement
compared to those given a placebo
bracelet (Agent's Actions, 1976, 6,
454).
Copper can also
be used for pain relief.
Anthroposophical medicine has had
long success with copper ointment.
Copper has an anti-inflammatory
effect because of its ability to
utilise selective anti-oxidants. A
copper salicylate complex supplement
can be used instead of high-dose
aspirin therapy. (Inflammation, 1977,
2, 217-238).
